Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) & Laser Treatments in St. John’s

At KarmaDerm Cosmetic Dermatology, we offer a range of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser treatments at our St. John’s clinic to treat a variety of skin conditions. Learn more about these procedures and the conditions they treat by following the links below.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)/Broad Band Light (BBL)

This light therapy is used to treat benign vascular and pigmented lesions of the skin by targeting the pigment and eliminating or reducing it without causing damage to surrounding tissue.

The IPL/BBL is effective for treating skin conditions, such as rosacea, small spider veins, port wine stains (birthmarks), sun damage spots and hyperpigmentation among others.

Permanent Hair Reduction

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is used to permanently reduce the amount of hair on the face and/or body (by about 60 to 90%). The light travels down the hair shaft of an actively growing hair and destroys the bulb or root of the hair where the concentration of the melanin pigment is the highest. The affected follicle is destroyed and absorbed into the surrounding tissue in the process, thereby making hair regrowth impossible. IPL permanent hair reduction will not work on white, grey, red or very blonde hair. Several treatments scheduled at recommended intervals will be needed for successful results.

Additional benefits include the elimination of ingrown hair problems, reduced need to shave or use of depilatories, and smoother skin.

Nd:YAG Laser Therapy

The 1064nm laser sends a pulse of energy into the unwanted blood vessel. Red blood cells are heated, leading to complete or partial collapse. The targeted vessel then degenerates and the body absorbs it and repairs the area. Thereby, visible veins then disappear from the surface of the skin. Patients normally resume routine activities immediately.

This laser treatment we offer our St. John’s clients is used to treat vascular concerns, such as facial telangiectasia, deep spider veins and angiomas.

Photorejuvenation

An intense pulsed light/broad band light procedure is used to treat a variety of skin blemishes and imperfections such as sun damage, facial telangiectasia, diffuse redness (erythema), mild wrinkling, melasma, and other red and brown pigmented spots for a clearer revitalized complexion. The full face, neck, hands and chest can be treated with little to no downtime. Several treatments may be needed for optimal and long lasting results.

Skin Tightening with Skin Tyte II

Skin Tyte II is a specialized intense pulsed light (IPL) and non-invasive treatment that uses a series of rapid pulses which penetrate into the deeper dermis layer of the skin to stimulate collagen production and thereby causes it to become firmer and stronger. This results in a tightening effect on sagging, lax skin. Parts of the body that can be treated are the neck, jawline and abdomen. For optimal results, several treatments will be required and full results may be seen at about 2 to 4 months after the treatments.

This is a preferred treatment option, because it has no downtime, it is quick and comfortable, and the gradual tightening effect continues over time.

Blue Light with Sciton BBL

Blue light therapy is performed with Sciton Broadband Light (BBL). A specific wavelength of light is delivered to the affected area using a chilled crystal. The objective of this treatment is to stack light into the skin, which causes the destruction of the p.acnes bacteria. This treatment has demonstrated to be helpful in treating mild to severe acne.

The patient may feel a slight tingling sensation during treatment and may experience some slight redness for several hours after the treatment. A minimum of 6 treatments is recommended, spaced about one week apart. A maintenance treatment may be required about 3 to 6 months after the series of treatments has been completed.

Skin Resurfacing with ResurFX by Lumenis M22

The ResurFX is a 1565nm fractional, non-ablative laser that creates tiny high precision micro-channels into the skin, leaving the surface and surrounding tissue unaffected. This skin resurfacing process stimulates the body’s natural healing response and new healthy tissue is formed.

ResurFX provides the perfect balance between efficacy and patient comfort on treating wrinkles, discolorations, striae and scars. For optimal results, a set of 4 to 5 treatments about one month apart may be needed. The biggest advantage of ResurFX laser over other skin resurfacing options is the quick, comfortable recovery time.
